Everything You Need to Know About Gelato Messina

Known for their lengthy queues in Sydney and Melbourne, we were introduced to Messina’s beautiful gelato that they’re so famous for. Yes, if you haven’t heard, Gelato Messina’s first ever Queensland store has finally opened at The Strand in Coolangatta! You should probably get there soon because you’ve got 40 flavours to get through ;).

Don’t take our word for it, we’ll let the gelato speak for itself - but first, you need to know what makes Gelato Messina so special…

We met with the Gold Coast’s stores partner, Oliver Findlay, who blew us away with the passion and creativity behind the brand founded by Nick Palumbo. Here’s why, the product is freshly made each day on the premises with the very best and REAL ingredients. What do we mean by real? All ingredients are in their most natural form from the roasting and grind of pistachios, flown in from Italy might we add, to baking their own apple pies and brownies - absolutely nothing has colourings, flavourings or preservatives. If that doesn’t get your stomach singing, there’s only 4-8% fat in their dairy flavours and no fat in their sorbets! Only real ingredients will give the amazing full-bodied texture and rich, ravishing flavours that some gelatos lack.

To make your mouth water even more, we thought it would only be right to tell you that not only do they serve their 35 signature flavours, but also have five weekly specials which make appearances only a few times a year. We got the pleasure of trying their weekly special Ginger Lust, which sadly isn’t available at the moment, but if you see it again sometime in the future, you simply must try it! It will take you to a wonderful world of fresh gingerbread men with ginger and almond cake - delish! If ginger isn’t your thing, the next flavour you have to try is their signature Salted Coconut and Mango. Words cannot describe the flavour sensation that goes on in your mouth. Fun fact: they use Queensland mangoes! According to Oliver, Queensland have the best mangoes in Australia and are used for every Messina store in Australia - not just the Coolangatta one… we can definitely agree on that because it’s the best mango flavoured gelato we’ve had.

We could go on for days about each and every flavour and how amazing they all were. There wasn’t one we didn’t like, let’s put it that way! Whether you’re sweet, salty, classic or adventurous, we can guarantee there’s something for you, just ask Lauchy the very friendly supervisor and team to help you pick your favourite.

Girls, they also make quirky and wonderful gelato cakes. We suggest this is the place to go when looking for the perfect cake for your next event! Need we say more!?

How do you get to this gelato heaven you ask? It’s located in Coolangatta’s newly built foodie epicentre of Queensland, The Strand. You’ll find them beachside amongst restaurateurs and retailers. The guys are getting so good at what they do, that they’ve planned to open a store in Las Vegas by the end of this month.

Cash only, never fear there’s an ATM close by inside the shopping centre.
